Here is an interesting stat: Every Halloween, almost 18,000 tons of pumpkins get thrown out after 31st October. If these pumpkins are not composted properly, they end up landfilling and while decaying they release methane gas.
It sounds terrifying. So can we avoid throwing out and can we cook a carved halloween pumpkin?
Well, the answer is yes.
Before cooking, note that the pumpkins we purchase for halloween are specially grown for carving purposes. These pumpkins do not taste similar to ones which we cook regularly or are used for pumpkin pies.
These pumpkins are perfectly edible and I cook mine every year.
Is it safe to eat a pumpkin that is already carved?
Maybe. It depends on how long the pumpkin has been carved.
At our home, we follow the protocol of 24 hours. We cook the carved pumpkin within 24 hours.
If you have a pumpkin which has been sitting out on the porch for the last few days, we strictly recommend not to cook these pumpkins.
Since the idea is to cook the pumpkin within 24 hours, we do not wash pumpkins with any antibacterial liquids. If you are using any antibacterial solvents, then do not cook these pumpkins.
