But exactly where did this tradition come from?
Why Do We Carve Pumpkins on Halloween?
If you can believe it, pumpkins weren’t the first food to be carved, originally people used to carve turnips instead. The idea of carving turnips was due to old Irish folklore. Details of folklore may change depending on who tells the story. But all the stories involve a man named Stingy Jack who tricked the devils several times. This caused Devil to be upset with Jack and so he gave him a hot piece of coal which Jack put into a carved-out turnip.
As silly as this story sounds, this was the origin of Jack-o-lantern. When Jack died, God didn’t allow him in heaven and the devil didn’t let him into hell. So it’s believed that Jack was sentenced to roam the earth for eternity. Due to this tale, Irish families carved out turnips and placed them in the windows and porches to ward off evil spirits and keep Stingy Jack away. So why don’t we still carve turnips?
When the Irish immigrated to the United States of America, they continued on with this tradition. But they discovered that pumpkins were more readily available. Pumpkins were also much easier to carve. So the tradition of carving pumpkins was born. But all over the world people have different traditions during Halloween with pumpkin carving one of the most popular ones.
